Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer Phd Programmes in Modern History

Job description

The new associate professor will be a member of the Modern History section of the Department of History, Archaeology and Area Studies and will teach the following degree programmes: a three-year BA in History, a one-year MA in History, and a two-year Research Master in History. These programmes are taken by about 1,000 students altogether. The research undertaken by the academic staff is located at the Institute of Culture and History (ICG) at the UvA. Research priorities in history are currently being redefined. The new appointee will be expected to take an active part in this process, focussing on the research areas of the history of international relations and/or modern German history. We are seeking to appoint a colleague with outstanding research skills, demonstrated by publications in international refereed journals and with academic presses, who can deliver a significant and leading contribution to the research activities of the Department.

The new associate professor is expected to design and provide courses on the history of post-war international relations and/or modern German history. He or she will also be expected to design other courses according to his/her specific research interests, and will also be involved in the supervision of BA, MA and PhD theses.

The new associate professor will take part in the administrative duties of the section, the department and ocasionally the faculty. He or she will be a driving force in departmental affairs, and in the further development of our teaching and research programmes, including fundraising from government agencies and the private sector. Excellent command of both Dutch and English is required, preferably with international teaching experience. If Dutch is not the native language, proficiency is to be acquired within two years, with support from the faculty. Enthusiasm, an interdisciplinary attitude and a strong team spirit are all essential, and a broad international network is highly welcome.

Requirements

We are looking for a senior scholar with a strong record of research and teaching in modern history, with an emphasis on the history of post-1945 international relations and/or 20th century German history. A completed PhD and postdoc experience is required, preferably in History, Political Science or another relevant discipline, and broad teaching experience is expected at BA, MA and preferably PhD levels. Proven capacity to design, apply for, and direct joint research projects will be an important point for consideration.

Conditions of employment

We are offering a full-time tenured position, to be confirmed after an initial appointment of two years. The gross monthly salary will be between €4,428 (scale 13) and €5,920 (scale 14).

Department

The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strong international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. There are almost 1,000 employees affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 6,500 students.

New impulses are required in order to further develop education and research in the humanities. Therefore, the Faculty of Humanities is looking for academics at a range of levels who can serve as the new generation of lecturing staff. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree and to have a background in the humanities or related disciplines. Outstanding didactic qualities and an affinity with students are required. It is crucial that candidates are able to combine solid research with appealing teaching. It goes without saying that they should also be familiar with the latest developments in their field. The new UvA academics will contribute to the Faculty's envisaged expansion and modernisation by bridging the gap between the various disciplines. Consequently, all lecturing staff must be capable of teaching courses for more than one specific study programme.

The Faculty of Humanities offers you the opportunity to collaborate with leading scholars at research institutes that - partly as a result of their multidisciplinary approach - enjoy worldwide renown. Moreover, you will be teaching in a dynamic context in which new educational methods are being developed.

Together with other lecturing staff new to the University, you will participate in a comprehensive introductory programme. All new staff will be mentored during the first year of appointment. If appropriate, based on the candidate's teaching portfolio, additional didactical training will be made available as part of the appointment, which leads to the award of a formal qualification.
